Creating Future Economic Prospects for Reintegration of Refugees and IDPs in Balkh, Samangan and Baghlan Provinces of Afghanistan through the Layer Poultry Value Chain, (January – December 2018) : The project aims to improve skills and capacity of 1,500 (90% female) returnees and IDPs to create 1,500 stable and income-generating layer poultry enterprises and enhance their access to market through the creation of sustainable layer poultry value chain. This project started after the successful implementation of pilot project in 2017.

This project is funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

 


Village Uplift Program in Shah Rahim village of Khulm District, Balkh Province, (January 2018- December 2019) : The objective of this project is to economically empower and strengthen the socio-economic rights of poor rural women in Shah Rahim village of Khulm District, Balkh province. The project targets 110 women to be trained in entrepreneurship, skills and provide support for micro-enterprise development and market linkages. This project is funded by Hand in Hand international.

 


Pilot Project of “Creating Future Economic Prospects for Reintegration of Refugees and IDPs in Balkh Province of Afghanistan through the Layer Poultry Value Chain”, (September – December 2017) : The project aims to improve skills and capacity of 500 returnees and IDPs to create 500 stable and income-generating layer poultry enterprises and enhance their access to market through the creation of sustainable layer poultry value chain. The project beneficiaries are 70% women and implemented in Mahajir Qeshlaq Village of Sholgara district, Bala-e-Shahrak Hamdard and Shahrak Qaleen Bafa of Nahr-i-Shahi district of Balkh province. This project is funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

 


Village Uplift Program in Faqir Abad village of Mazar-e-Sharif, (July 2017- June 2019) : The objective of this project is to economically empower and strengthen the socio-economic rights of poor rural women in Faqir Abad village of Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh province. The project targets 110 women to be trained in entrepreneurship, skills and provide support for micro-enterprise development and market linkages. This project is funded by Hand in Hand international.

 


Socio-Economic Empowerment of Women and Men in Chimtal District of Balkh Province (January 2017- December 2019) : The goal of this project is to economically empower and strengthen the socio-economic rights of poor rural women and men with particular focus on women. The project targets 600 people (70% female) to be trained in entrepreneurship, skills and provide support for micro-enterprise development and market linkages. This project is funded by CAFOD and Hand in Hand international.

**Note: This project is further expanded to two more CDCs of Chimtal district covering an extra 300 beneficiaries.

 


Food Insecurity and Malnutrition Household Perception Survey in 12 provinces of Afghanistan (May 2017): HiH Af in partnership with OSDS facilitates and conductes household interviews at provincial and district levels of 12 provinces such as Kabul, Oruzgan, Badghis, Bamyan, Balkh, Dikondi, Kunduz, Kandahar, Laghman, Wardak, Herat and Paktia. Under this project views of 330 households are captured in above mentioned provinces.

This project is funded by World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations (UN).

 


Execution of Food Insecurity and Malnutrition Consultation Workshops (April – May 2017): The goal of this project is to obtain a wide range of ideas on complexity of food insecurity and malnutrition in the country in particular at the sub national level. The project is implemented in the 5 regions (Badakhshan, Bamyan, Herat, Kandahar and Nangarhar) and provides the following outputs:

  • Obtain insights of communities affected by food insecurity and malnutrition.
  • Collect information and case studies on the severity of situation from government officials.
  • Allow stakeholders at the levels to participate in the consultation process and share their findings.

This project is funded by World Food Program (WFP) of the United Nations (UN).

 


Reducing poverty and gender inequality in Sarepul Province of Afghanistan by improving household income and financial resilience for rural women through enterprise and job creation (Apr 2015 – Mar 2018): The overall purpose of the project is to raise incomes by creating/enhancing micro-enterprises and jobs for 13,300 rural beneficiaries in Sarepul Province, Afghanistan and demonstrate improved financial resilience through raised household savings and strengthening women in society. This project is funded by Department for International Development (DFID) & Hand in Hand International.

 


Supporting rural entrepreneurship and promoting women’s socio-economic empowerment in Dara-i-Suf Bala and Dara-i-Suf Payan districts of Samangan Province (Mar 2014 – Aug 2016):  The overall objective of this action is to economically empower and strengthen the socio-economic rights of poor rural women and men in Afghanistan, with a particular focus on women. The project targeted total of 5400 rural entrepreneurs (70% women) and creates 8,100 jobs. This project is co-funded by European Union and Hand in Hand International.

NB: This project is extended by Hand in Hand International till 31 December 2016 to further support the establishment and registration of Associations.

 


Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) (Jan 2015 – Dec 2016): The overall objective of this project is to empower 3,000 members 70% female and create 4,200 jobs.  in Kishindeh and Shortepa  districts of Balkh province. The aim of this project is to improve the livelihood of the targeted groups through implementation of HiH enterprise development and Job creation model. This project is funded by Hand in Hand International.

 


Improving Lives through creation of Microenterprises and Jobs in Jawzjan (Jan 2014 – Dec 2015):  The objective of this program is to reduce poverty and gender disparity in the targeted area through creating enterprises and therefore jobs.  HiH Af reaches out to the most vulnerable and under-served regions and groups in society, with focus on poor, rural and financially excluded populations. The project targeted total of 1,800 rural entrepreneurs (70% women) an creates 2,700 jobs. This project is funded by Hand in Hand International and Hand in Hand Sweden.

 


Piloting and Implementation of the Concept of One District One Product (ODOP) for Community Led Micro Enterprise Development in Rural Areas of Parwan and Herat Provinces (Jul 2014 – Dec 2014):  The ODOP approach is originated from One Village One Product (OVOP) development model which was initiated in 1979 in Oita Provinces of Japan. The prime objectives for this project are to recommend the standardized products with added value, value chain analysis, develop market and facilitate access to technical, financial and business development services as well as to develop implementation strategy, capacity development strategy and modules, develop pool of business development service providers along with operational guide line for the large scale replication. This project was funded by World Bank through AREDP/MRRD.

 


Business Development Training Project for SMEs- Bamyan Province (Jun 2014 – Nov 2014): The objectives of this project are: 1) to build the capacity of 48 SMEs in accounting, financial management and budgeting; 2) to increase competitiveness of SMEs through the provision of training courses on marketing and market management and marketing strategy; 3) to increase SMEs knowledge on business ethics, health and safety, business law, tax, business ethics and business related social challenges (e.g. child labor and gender); 4) to improve understanding and utilization of best basic practices in business management and administration; and finally to improve understanding and utilization of best practices in operations and supply chain management. This project was funded by World Bank through AREDP/MRRD.

 


 Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) (Dec 2010 – Dec 2014): Under this program total 7,500 rural entrepreneurs targeted in Kaldar, Marmul and Sholgara districts of Balkh province. The aim of this project is to improve the livelihood of the targeted groups through implementation of HiH enterprise development and Job creation model. Under this project a Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) established in Mazar e Sharif to train people from rural areas but also staff from other NGOs and Government organizations and will share best practices with different development agencies. This project is funded by Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and Hand in Hand International.

 


Value Chain Improvement Project for Seven Women Cooperatives (Oct 2012 – Oct 2013): This project was implemented in Balkh, Kunduz, Takhar, Badakhshan, Parwan, Nangarhar and Herat provinces to build the capacity of head of women cooperatives and its members through exposure visit to Hand in Hand India  and provision of training and follow up mentoring the exposure visit. This project was funded by USAID through Agricultural Development Fund/Agricultural Credit Enhancement (ADF/ACE).

 


Sanitation and Hygiene Awareness and Enterprise Development (May 2011 – Apr 2014):  This project complemented the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), providing to hygiene and sanitation awareness and training to 7,500 Self Help Group members and also supporting the establishment of rural enterprises by providing Enterprise Incubation Fund (EIF) to enable group members to start their micro-enterprises. This project was funded by Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust (J&JCCT).

 


Horticulture and Livestock Project (HLP) (March 2009- Dec 2011 ): HiH Af has successfully implemented a series of World Bank funded projects in close coordination with HLP department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) in Balkh province, providing social mobilization and leadership training, development and consolidation of saving box, support to organize Farmer Field Schools (FFS), assisting the producer groups for external market linkage, inducting the producer groups collective/integrated marketing system, awareness building about agriculture cooperatives, how to act cooperative as an effective business center and formation of Farmer Service Center at district level. These projects were funded by World Bank through MAIL.

 


Consulting Services and Training for AREDP (Feb 2009 – July 2011): HiH Af trained the Provincial Enterprise Facilitators and Village Facilitators of AREDP/MRRD from Balkh, Herat, Nangarhar, Bamyan and Parwan Provinces, On Social Mobilization, Self Help Group Formation, Business Development Services (BDS), Access to Credit, Value Chain and market linkages. This project was funded by World Bank through AREDP/MRRD.

 


Facilitating Rural Enterprise Development (FRED) through capacity building of Self-Help groups in Badakhshan (2007 – 2009): The project builds on Afghanaid’s previous work with the DFID and Diana Memorial Fund (2005-2007). The overall goal of the project was to strengthen rural income through mobilizing community saving/credit and enhancing rural enterprise development. This project was funded by Hand in Hand.

 


Small & Medium sized Enterprise Development (SMED) – SME implementation in Balkh (Jun 2008 – Jun 2009): HiH Af jointly implemented this project with MRRD/NABDP/AREDP in Balkh province. The project aimed to support the implementation of two SMEs in Balkh province (1). Melon Grading, Packaging, Marketing Enterprise and (2). Almond Sorting, Grading, and Packaging.  Activities included training in Business Management, Finance, Value Addition and Marketing, Technical training in product handling and Business Mentoring for  SMEs.  This project was funded by World Bank through MRRD.

 


Mass Mobilization into Entrepreneurship (MME) Project (Jan 2008 – Dec 2010): This project was carried out in partnership with the Indian Government in Khulm and Nahr-e-Shahee districts of Balkh province. MME served as a pre-pilot project for AREDP/MRRD. This project was funded by Government of India through AREDP/MRRD.
