A Tale of Resilience and Renewed Hope

Meet Mohammad Sultan, a 44-year-old from Darqaduq village in the Sayyad district. Married and the father of four sons and three daughters, his tale is one of determination and success in tough times.

Before Hand in Hand Afghanistan Organization (HIHAO) stepped in, Mohammad faced big challenges. Working as a daily wage laborer with no stable job made it hard for him to support his family. The harsh winters made it worse, leaving him with few workdays each week and the constant worry of providing for his family without a regular income.

“I really needed to get food for my family. Without a stable job, I used to work daily in the village.”

With his land dependent on rain and limited economic opportunities due to recent droughts, Mohammad was forced to sell household items at low prices. His children, needing food, added to his responsibilities. The situation was tough, and the family struggled to access basic necessities, especially food.

The turning point in Mohammad Sultan’s life happened when HIHAO, with support from AHF, started the project of “Provision of urgent lifesaving humanitarian assistance in Sar-e-Pul province”. Recognizing the tough economic situation, Mohammad was identified as someone who needed help. The aid package included two hundred kilograms of flour, sixteen liters of oil, sixteen kilograms of beans, and two kilograms of salt, a lifeline for 2623 families in similar circumstances.

“Thanks to the timely food aid, I am relieved of the worry of getting food items. I can comfortably focus on my daily wage work.”

The project implemented by HIHAO aimed to ease immediate food-related problems faced by families in the region, providing aid packages to those in the center and five districts of Sar-e-Pul, including Sayyad district.

This support changed Mohammad Sultan’s life. The stress of getting food for his family lifted, and he could focus on his daily wage work. He felt grateful and relieved, now able to not only meet immediate food needs but also save a bit for the future.

“I am very happy because I can use the wages I receive for other needs and save a little for emergency situations.”

Mohammad Sultan expresses his heartfelt thanks to HIHAO and AHF for this timely and invaluable assistance. As he looks back at the positive changes in his life, he recognizes the potential ripple effect of such help in easing the persistent challenges of unemployment and drought faced by a big part of the population.

This success story shows the powerful impact of humanitarian aid and the strength of individuals like Mohammad Sultan, who, with support, can rebuild their lives and look towards a more hopeful future.
