Mrs. Sakina, a 75-year-old resident of Baghawi Baloch village in Sar-e Pul province, she is the mother of six children, three daughters and three sons. Mrs. Sakina describes, “As my sons and daughters grew up and got married, each of them moved to different regions and became busy with their own lives. I was left with my 80-year-old husband. Life became difficult for me. I was in the hardest conditions, unable to afford medicine and treatment for my husband. Sometimes life was good, sometimes bad. I wished I had the ability to do some work or profession to meet my and my husband’s needs. Joining this project was a ray of hope for me to achieve my goals. Despite having a lot of experience in livestock and poultry farming, I learned better and more things by attending training sessions.”
Despite the hardships, Mrs. Sakina remained hopeful and wished she had the means to work and support her family. Her opportunity came when she joined a project initiated by Hand in Hand Afghanistan Organization. Although she had extensive experience in livestock and poultry farming, the training sessions provided by HIHAO enhanced her knowledge and skills.
HIHAO established a small poultry farm for Mrs. Sakina, supplying her with 19 chickens and 1 rooster, along with the necessary items to start a small business. With her experience and newfound knowledge, she diligently cared for the chickens, confident that her hard work would pay off. Soon, her chickens began laying eggs, which she sold in the market and to neighboring households. The income from egg sales allowed her to purchase medicine for her husband and meet the household’s needs. Additionally, the eggs provided nutritious meals for her family.
The poultry farm transformed Mrs. Sakina’s life, lifting her and her husband out of hopelessness and poverty. She now feels strong and hopeful, continuing her journey with determination and perseverance. Mrs. Sakina serves as a role model for women in her village, demonstrating that with effort and determination, one can create a suitable job and earn a good income at any age.
